Table and coffee table tops should be protected from direct exposure to high temperatures (hot dishes), wetting (e.g., leaky vases), dampness, scratching (placing sharp objects or others, e.g., metal sculptures, metal bag fittings), and chemically active solutions (including spilled solvents, alcohol, body care fluids). These factors can cause damage, such as to the varnish, and may result in stains, discoloration, or dulling. Coasters should be used to prevent damage.
