The surfaces of tables and coffee tables should be protected from direct exposure to high temperatures (hot dishes), wetting (water - e.g., leaking vases), dampness, scratching (placing sharp objects or other items, e.g., metal sculptures, metal bag fittings), and chemically active solutions (including spilled solvent, alcohol, body care fluids). These factors can cause damage, e.g., to the varnish, and can lead to stains, discoloration, or dulling. Coasters should be used to avoid damage.
