Table and coffee table tops should be protected from direct exposure to high temperatures (hot dishes), getting wet (e.g., leaking vases), moisture, scratches (placing sharp objects or other items, e.g., metal sculptures, metal bag fittings), and chemically active solutions (including spilled solvent, alcohol, body care products). These factors can cause damage, e.g., to the lacquer, and may result in stains, discoloration, or dulling. Coasters should be used to avoid damage.
